Kiss Me DeadlyKing of Prey

I bought my first e-books yesterday and loved them. I bought Shannon Stacey’s Kiss Me Deadly and Mandy Roth’s King of Prey. It was very exciting for me to find two novellas that I enjoyed. One of my major pet peeves is when authors try to introduce to many situations and people. In Stacey’s Kiss Me Deadly Bridget awakens from a realistic dream of a naked man standing over her. When she looks around her room she is surprised to find a large raven instead of a man in her room. She tries to shoo the bird out of her house and when that fails she whacks it with a pillow. The raven crashes into the wall and turns into a man. Fear overwhelms her and she makes a dash for the door despite the warnings from the wereraven. Outside are thousands of ravens (flashback to the Birds movie?).

I loved this book because it doesn’t veer from the storyline. Stacey doesn’t try and introduce five characters knowing that she only has 35,000 words to tell the story in. Of course the idea of finding love in such a short story is shaky but I found it refreshing to read something new that didn’t leave me questioning all aspects of the tale.

In Roth’s King of Pray I found a similar format. Roth works with the time allotted to cover a longer period of time. She often breaks the story up and heads it with three weeks later or two months later. By lengthening the amount of time for the two lovers to know each other Roth has made me feel more comfortable about the relationship she is telling. Roth’s tale is about a King of another world, Kabril, who must find his mate in order for his people to become fertile again. The bird people of Kabril’s world don’t like humans so it comes as a great shock to find out that his mate is human. This story takes place on earth and on the birdpeople’s world but is realistic to the time frame. I enjoyed this novella just as much as I enjoyed Stacey’s novella. If I had to rate them I’d give both of them 3.5 stars out of 5.
