I know that many people have written blog reviews over Surviving Demon Island. You can find one here or here. Last week I read the book, and for the past couple of days I’ve been pondering what to write. This is what I came up with. I enjoyed the book and when I was finished I wanted the next installment. It’s the type of book that you read to relax and avoid thinking without getting pissed off because it assumes you’re dumb. On the other hand, the longer I thought about it, the more I realized that it was a short lived satisfaction. The book was exciting. After I completed the book, the adrenaline left and I couldn’t put my finger on why I flew through the pages of the book.
Gina Bliss is an action star in need of a vacation. That vacation comes in the form of a reality tv game show, Surviving Demon Island. Gina soon realizes that the show may not be exactly what she’s been told.
Derek is a consultant for the show and much more. He is team leader for a squad of demon killers. They are fighting pure demons, half demons, and humans modified into demons.
The contestants have a choice merge with the demon fighters or be flown away from the island. They all choose to stay because of new found similarities in their childhood razing the question: who will survive demon island?
I had no problem with Gina being an action star. I felt that Ms. Burton explained Gina’s role well enough for me to buy that Gina was taking a vacation. I knew the ‘twist’ before it happened and I’m okay with that. I was pleased with the constant action and a little embarrassed when Gina was observed in the throes of pre-masturbating.
I didn’t think this was going to be a literary challenge. I don’t know what I was hoping for (so I don’t expect Ms. Burton to do this), but something was missing. I think I wanted the plot to make me think a little harder. Despite that small flaw, this is a beach book for me. I would love to take it somewhere when I want to relax and not expend much energy. This book is a 3.5 for me.
