I’m posting my TT at midnight so that it shows up for tomorrow. Sorry for the wait.

Silent Assembly

7 Mar

Can you imagine living in a country where you were denied the right to silent assembly? That is exactly what happened March 4, 2007 in Iran. Several dozen women were silently protesting court proceedings against four women’s rights activists when they were rounded up, placed into two vans, and taken to a maximum security prison controlled by the Information Ministry. The eight youngest were released two days later, but the remaining women have not been allowed to see family or lawyers. One major question about the arrests is if they have anything to do with International Women’s Day (March 8).

International Women’s Day has been held since the early 1900’s. It is supposed to be a day of recognition for women, but I wonder what it means that I’ve never celebrated this day. Does it say something about the USA that it’s citizens choose not to celebrate it, yet developing nations do? How does this make you feel? I’ve heard of Sweetest Day, President’s Day, and Halloween; holidays that mean nothing to me. Why haven’t I heard of this day?
