Favorite Line: “The bruises hadn’t completely healed from our last outing, and I had a fresh scar on my shoulder from a dead woman.” ( p. 8 )

Able to see the past by touching different items, Corine Solomon has never forgotten the town where her mother was murdered. Nor has she lost her determination to find the killers. With her former lover’s lucky ability, she hopes she will be able to put her past to rest. But in Kilmer, Georgia, nothing is as it seems and unfortunately nothing works right. Including her ex’s supernatural luck.

Hell Fire is the second book in Ann Aguirre’s Corine Solomon series. It picks up at the end of Blue Diablo with Chance (Corine’s ex) keeping his promise to use his luck to solve the mystery surrounding the death of Corine’s mom. It jumps right into the utter wrongness of Kilmer with a Doberman that runs out of the woods, collapses in the road and dies; the dog has wounds shaped like huge claw marks. The description of the death sets up the story and gives readers a glimpse of what they are in store for.

“I saw the moment his eyes went liquid still, living tissue to dead meat.”

The story quickly climbs as we are introduced to the people of Kilmer, some of whom remind me of Stepford Wives. It speeds up when Jesse, Corine’s mentor, arrives in the small town and just keeps going until the end.

There were a few things that surprised me in Hell Fire. One, that the possible love triangle between Corine, Chance and Jesse made an appearance in this book; I thought it ended with book one. It was irritating. And two: the role a new person played in solving the murder; she was truly awesome. (Can’t go into more without plot spoilers.) Overall the story reminded me of The Village from a different viewpoint.

I enjoyed the story, but hated the ending. Remember I’m a romance junkie before anything else. If you haven’t read it yet check it out. Book three, Shady Lady, will be released in April 2011; book four, Devil’s Punch in April 2012; and book five, Bloody Maria in 2013.
