Review: Embers by Laura Bickle

Favorite Lines: “At first, she thought it was a doll stuffed inside the machine, curled in the fetal position. But she was not to be that lucky tonight. Blood pounded in her ears. Closer inspection showed the desiccated corpse of a child, dry as a milkweed husk.” (p. 13)

Detroit is a city filled with unemployed people filled with despair. Phantoms are all over the city and a serial arsonist threatens to wake a danger that could turn Detroit into ashes.

Anya Kalinczyk is a fire investigator and a psychic medium called a Lantern who assists a team of ghost hunters eliminate dangerous spirits. Gifted with a protective fire elemental familiar as a child, she will need all the help she can get to protect her city from the supernatural terror about to consume Detroit.

Embers is an urban fantasy novel written in third person. The heroine, Anya Kalinczyk is a lonely but strong woman. She does not always make the best choices which is shown by her possible love interests. She knows what is good for her, but her need to connect with humanity steers her in a direction that could change her life.

I love the image of her familiar, Sparky the salamander. There’s one scene in which he is playing with a Gloworm that portrays him as an endearing character. It’s nice to see he is more than a big, bad, spirit destroying creature.

Embers is not a light or fluffy story. It shows the dirt that has to be scraped away before anything or anyone can find the beauty of redemption.

Laura Bickle, author of the Embers series, also writes urban fantasy under the name Alayna Williams. The next book in the Ember series, Sparks, will be released at the end of August 2010 according to the Barnes and Noble website.
